Summary

Botanist Alfred Homer, ever hopeful and constantly surprised, is invited on a road trip by his parents’ friend, Professor Morgan Bruno, who wants company as he tries to unearth the story of the mysterious poet John Skennen. But this is no ordinary road trip. Alfred and the Professor encounter towns where Black residents speak only in sign language and towns that hold Indigenous Parades; it is a land of house burnings, werewolves, and witches. Complete with Alfred’s drawings of plants both real and implausible, Days by Moonlight is a Dantesque journey taken during the “hour of the wolf,” that time of day when the sun is setting and the traveller can’t tell the difference between dog and wolf. And it asks that perpetual question: how do we know the things we know are real, and what is real anyway?

On July 4th, 2014 the world lost CJ Henderson, an iconic author and all-around great guy. He lost his battle with cancer, but he did not go quietly and he will not be forgotten. His work is immortalized in over 70 novels and works of non-fiction, and at least as many collections, anthologies, and magazines. In fact, new works by CJ Henderson will publish for years to come thanks to his heroic efforts to finish and find homes for those projects as-yet unpublished at the time of his illness, two of which are printed here.

CJ always did what he could to give other authors a boost. Encouraging them, mentoring them, sending opportunities their way. With that in mind those of us who called him friend feel there is no better tribute we can raise in his memory than an anthology filled with people he has helped over the years, writing stories inspired by CJ or his work.

We hope you enjoy these tales of fantasy, science fiction and horror, and that they might inspire you as well.

Featuring stories by: John L. French, Jean Rabe, Patrick Thomas, David Boop, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Jeff Young, Leona Wisoker Robert M. Price, Leona Wisoker, James Chambers, and, as always, CJ Henderson.

Dr. Jonas Allen has been with the Center for Disease Control almost sixteen years. For most of his career, he’s been “in the trenches.” In 1997, he was in Zaire, investigating a monkey pox outbreak. He assisted investigators at the World Health Organization during the Uganda Ebola outbreak of 2000. He has studied West Nile, SARS, and H1N1, and he was even on-site after the Haitian earthquake of 2010.

Jonas has been a firsthand witness to countless medical emergencies, any one of which could have spelled disaster for humanity. Each time, mankind dodged the fatal bullet—until now. Nothing could have prepared Jonas and his team for the nightmare that is about to unfold.

People start exhibiting symptoms of violent psychosis. They cannot escape madness, and neither can the people around them. Deep within the infected minds of these victims, two organisms struggle to survive, and Jonas must race against time to identify the culprits and stop a rage pandemic. Atlanta is under siege. The CDC has become a refuge and possibly humanity’s last hope for survival. However, the solution to the pandemic may be more terrifying than the disease itself.
