The New Life (La vita nuova) was written in 1295. It is an exemple of the medieval genre of courtly love in a prosimetrum style (a piece containing both verse and prose), and it is Dante's most important work before the Divine Comedy. The New Life is a spiritual autobiography. Dante describes his love for a young woman named Beatrice, from her first glance until his mourning after her death.
