The Remainder
Alia Trabucco Zerán
Translator Sophie Hughes
Publisher: Coffee House Press
Summary
The Remainder presents a new way of writing about Chile’s dictatorial past, not narrated by the regime’s main protagonists, but by the next generation who inherits their wounds. Zerán examines the holes left by a violent history through two intertwined perspectives, and the protagonists' struggle to find their own voices is rendered beautifully by the indiosyncrasies and musicality of her prose, making a political past intimately personal. The Remainder won the prize for Best Unpublished Literary Work in Chile and was very well received there upon publication. And Other Stories is publishing the UK edition this fall, giving us a great runway for publicity.
