Sinossi

Holland, 1672: a mob tears two statesmen to pieces in the street, and a quiet gentleman in Dordrecht goes on trying to breed a black tulip because a hundred thousand guilders are offered for one. Dumas takes the real lynching of the De Witt brothers, sets a flower contest beside it, and lets a jealous neighbor do the rest. The tulip mania was forty years past and the greed was not. Fifty-three plates of Rembrandt, Pieter de Hooch and their contemporaries carry the Dutch courtyards, burghers and golden-age light that surround Dumas's tale of tulip greed.

Travellers chosen for the difficulty of what they attempted: Marco Polo in Asia, Ruxton in Mexico and the Rockies, Barth in Central Africa, Atkinson in Siberia, Alexine Tinné in the Sudan, MacGahan on the Oxus, Burnaby on the ride to Khiva and Baker at the sources of the Nile. W. H. Davenport Adams compiled dozens of such books for young readers in the 1880s. He quotes the travellers' own journals at length, which is why the book has outlasted its purpose. Sixty plates after Turner and Friedrich widen the horizons of these journeys, from polar seas to desert light.

The Great Roxhythe is set in the glittering but treacherous court of Charles II, in which the brilliant and wealthy Marquis of Roxhythe wears the mask of a cynical, self-serving courtier, allowing even his friends to believe he is cold and disloyal. Yet this public façade is his greatest sacrifice; in secret, he drains his own fortune and stains his own name to operate as the king's most trusted spy and protector. The story is a tragedy of devotion, leaving Roxhythe completely alone, his immense loyalty and suffering a silent burden known only to the sovereign he serves so completely. Georgette Heyer (died 1974) was a significant literary figure of the 20th century. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. As a work of classic literary fiction, The Great Roxhythe exemplifies the narrative craft and social insight that defined great storytelling of its era. Literary fiction of this period was characterized by careful attention to character psychology, social milieu, and the moral questions that animated public discourse.

When FINAL BLACKOUT was written there was still a Maginot Line, Dunkirk was just another French coastal town and the Battle of Britain, the Bulge, Saipan, Iwo, V2s and Nagasaki were things unknown and far ahead in history. While it concerns these things, its action will not take place for many years yet to come and it is, therefore, still a story of the future though some of the "future" it embraced (about one fifth) has already transpired. When published in magazine form before the war it created a little skirmish of its own and, I am told, as time has gone by and some of it has unreeled, interest in it has if anything increased. So far its career has been most adventurous as a story. The "battle of FINAL BLACKOUT" has included loud wails from the Communists—who said it was pro-fascist (while at least one fascist has held it to be pro-Communist). Its premises have been called wild and unfounded on the one hand while poems (some of them very good) have been written about or dedicated to the Lieutenant. Meetings have been held to nominate it to greatness while others have been called to hang the author in effigy (and it is a matter of record that the last at least was successfully accomplished).

However, belying its appearance as a simple fairy-tale, the work reveals many of Zolas characteristic themes, in particular the conflict between heredity and environment, between spirituality and sensuality between the powerful and the powerless. The dream of Angelique is at once reality and illusion, and this interplay provides the driving force of the novel. Above all, the novel is, as Zola himself described it, a poem of passion, displaying the lyrical dimension of his genius.
