Summary

A Promised Land - A Comprehensive Summary

This is a summary of A Promised Land by the 44th president of the United States, Barrack Obama, released in November 2020.
About The Author
Barrack Hussein Obama is the first US president of African descent and a member of the Democratic Party. He governed between the years 2009 and 2017, prior to which he had been the Illinois Senator.
Obama was born in 1961 to an African immigrant and an American mother with European roots. He grew up with an absentee father who had moved back to Africa after his parents divorced. He admits that his father's absence had shaped him more than the few moments in which he was present.
Obama is married to Michelle Obama, and together they have two daughters. Michelle has played a critical role in the making of the Obama that we know. This becomes even more evident in the book A Promised Land.
President Obama has written two other books before this one; Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope.
About The Book
The book is a memoir about his time in office; he started writing it shortly after his term ended.
The book has 768 pages and has seven parts and twenty-seven chapters. President Obama chronicles his political journey and talks about the people and groups of people who helped him in this journey.
He also writes about his thoughts, ideas, and principles concerning politics and personal life.
Obama wrote this book in a conversational tone, luring the reader into being immersed in the story and the events he describes in the book. What is unique is Obama does not shy away from giving credit to all those who helped him through the years to make his journey possible, from his speechwriters to the strategists.

What if I told you that the American criminal justice system has never been about, is not set up to seek out, and is not equipped to find, justice –- at least “justice” as understood by most? In many ways, it was designed this way by the Founding Fathers based on Benjamin Franklin’s vision that “it is better a hundred guilty persons should escape than one innocent person should suffer.”
Americans are taught that justice means fairness. They expect it from our legal system. “Equal Justice Under Law” is prominently inscribed on the Supreme Court. Yet law and justice in America are not necessarily the same thing. And they are certainly not applied in equal ways.
The disconnect between these realities and what Americans are taught about justice has led to great strife in our society. But what if everyone grew up understanding the limitations of our justice system, yet understood what it is striving to achieve? Through the Revolutionary War, historic cases, civil unrest, Broken Windows law enforcement, corrupt police and attorneys, and jury bias, the lens through which you see the American justice system is about to change, all as told by former Baltimore prosecutor –- Eric Oberer. It is time for a paradigm shift…

Recalling remarkable cases-and people-from a career launched in the first days of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Paul Seward leads us in his memoir through suspenseful diagnoses and explorations of anatomy. By his side, we learn to distinguish nursemaid's elbow from a true broken arm. We learn how our breathing and swallowing mechanisms resemble a practical joke. But when a baby's heart stops and a young doctor forgets what to do, the situation is far from funny. Within the conditions of great stress and rapid decision-making that are routine in the ER, Dr. Seward shows us that medical staff must be more than technicians of the body: they must be restorers of the human. Whether it is comforting anxious families or subjecting a distressed patient to tough procedures, they must learn the difficult work of caring for strangers. Throughout Patient Care, Dr. Seward reflects on how a life in medicine tests what it means to put ethics into practice.
