Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.UNIMPROVED OPPORTUNITIES: Several of the things which I shall say to you to-night may not sound very agreeable or encouraging to many of you, yet I think you will agree with me that they are facts that cannot be denied.

William James Wintle (1861-1920) was a Welsh writer who later became Oblate for the Abbey of Caldey Island in Wales. It was there that he wrote a series of ghost tales for the entertainment of eight boys who attended there. Wintle wrote that the stories were originally told on Sunday nights while "crouching over a wood fire on a wind-swept island off the Western shore".'The Ghost at the Blue Dragon' tells the story of Professor Latham, an academic who spends the summer at The Blue Dragon - an old inn in Saltminster with a reputation for being haunted. Early on in his stay he realizes that he has a doppelganger in the hotel. To begin with, the mysterious double seems bent on damaging the professor's reputation...but as the story progresses, it emerges that the intent is far more sinister....

El Dorado is a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson: It seems as if a great deal were attainable in a world where there are so many marriages and decisive battles, and where we all, at certain hours of the day, and with great gusto and despatch, stow a portion of victuals finally and irretrievably into the bag which contains us. And it would seem also, on a hasty view, that the attainment of as much as possible was the one goal of man's contentious life.

Fans of outlaws and vigilantes will enjoy this classic adventure tale of a sword-fighting hero out for revenge during the French Revolution.   A lawyer of unknown parentage raised by nobility, André-Louis Moreau had little concern for the plight of the lower class and the vast inequality in France until his friend, Philippe de Vilmorin, is killed in a duel after demanding justice for a murdered peasant. Outraged, Moreau speaks out against the aristocracy and his words sow the seeds of revolution.   Wanted by the law, Moreau assumes the role of Scaramouche, the clown character in a group of traveling actors. His swashbuckling adventures include inciting a riot mid–theater performance, apprenticing at a fencing academy, and discovering a revelation about his past that leads to an unexpected romance.   Utilizing his mastery of swordsmanship and oration to combat the corrupt nobility, Moreau is an iconic character whose story explores class, inequality, and the power of an individual to influence his society.

All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It's the best book we've had. - Ernest Hemingway
A nineteenth-century boy from a Mississippi River town recounts his adventures as he travels down the river with a runaway slave, encountering a family involved in a feud, two scoundrels pretending to be royalty, and Tom Sawyer's aunt who mistakes him for Tom.
In this unforgettable adventure for all ages, Twain delves into issues such as racism, friendship, war, religion, and freedom with an uncanny combination of lightheartedness and gravitas.
This was the first major American novel to be written in the vernacular, a dark and funny satire that exposes the bigotry and hypocrisy of provincial America during Mark Twain's lifetime. A rite of passage for ever young reader, this book continues to delight readers around the world and remains as fresh and as funny as ever.
