Summary

A Bear With Pants is the story of a young bear with a loving family but not much confidence. One of his legs is shorter than the other, so he walks with a limp, which gets him picked on at school – especially by the mean Snake with a Scarf. A Bear with Pants finds a friend in Rhino with a Sweater Vest. Soon, word of bullying spreads around the school, and the teachers announce that all students must look out for each other, regardless of what they wear, how they walk, or even how they comb their hair. Despite his challenges, A Bear with Pants makes plenty of friends, but what will he do about the bullies?

“Kindl inventively meshes classical myths, archeological findings and imaginative speculation in an intriguing tale full of mystery and emotion.” —Publishers Weekly

Last night I saw my sister, who is dead. She stood at the end of a long corridor, weeping. “Can it really be you, Ariadne, come back after all this time?” I whispered. She did not answer, but began slowly to sink through the floor.

Princess Xenodice is content to spend her days tending to the animals in the royal menagerie, haunting the workshop of a beautiful young man named Icarus, and visiting her brother who lives in the Labyrinth. Her safe and privileged world, however, has ominous cracks underfoot.

Soon battles for power and revenge threaten everything Xenodice loves. Betrayals from both within and without her family lead to a series of tragedies that Xenodice struggles to avert.

From the deepest layer of the Labyrinth under the Royal Palace to the topmost floor of the prison tower, this enthralling version of the myth of the maze and the Minotaur by master storyteller Patrice Kindl is filled with the marvelous and the strange.

“It’s Xenodice’s strong, appealing character that will get readers through the maze; her first-person narration brings the ancient setting vividly to life with rich detail and timeless emotions—sibling rivalry, heart-pounding crushes, moral outrage, and the pain of family secrets. An intriguing . . . blend of history, myth, and fiction.” —Booklist

“Readers who know the legend will enjoy the parallels and contrasts that occur throughout, but the strong storytelling lets Xenodice’s tale stand on its own, as well.” —School Library Journal

Mary Cassatt knew from a young age that she wanted to make her living as an artist. She persuaded her parents to send her to the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at age fifteen, and by age twenty, she had moved abroad to begin her painting career. After several years of study and success, she found her rightful place among the Impressionists, becoming their first and only female American member.Illustrated with Cassatt's own work and that of other influential Impressionists, as well as photographs of the artist, this book offers children a glimpse at life during the late 1800s and showcases the colorful vivaciousness of Cassatt's work. Her beloved portraits of mothers and children are highlighted here, but the book also includes lesser-known work that shows Cassatt's range of talent. Children will enjoy seeing the warm and loving images of others their age relaxing with pets, enjoying the outdoors, and being held by caring adults.Inspiring for all children, but especially appropriate for those with artistic interests, this book shows how one girl's lifelong dream to become an artist came true due to an independent spirit, determination, and commitment to her craft. Just as Mary Cassatt was an inspiration to many young artists who moved to Paris to fulfill their dreams, so may this book be a catalyst for young readers to follow their heart and mind towards their creative goals.
