Summary
This would be the second Uzbek novel translated into English and published in Euro-America (Uzbekistan publishes poor-quality English translations of works in Uzbekistan and they don’t cross borders). Novel is the first novel of planned dilogy that author may or may not have finished. The author was arrested and executed by the NKVD in 1938. Author is considered martyr for Uzbek national independence from Russian and Soviet colonialism. Translator's introduction captures historical importance of author and novel. Novel deals with questions of Russian colonialism, native nationalism, Islamic reform, and the history of gender and sexuality. Author is best known in Uzbekistan as a poet and dramatist, and he brings his talent in poetry and drama to the novel.
