  Ralph White came to America in the early 1970s while the Vietnam War was still raging. On his Christmas break while teaching courses in Chicago he drove Route 66 to Los Angeles. In the desert of New Mexico he had his first spiritually transcendent experience. He says, “I felt like my mind expanded in consort with the scope of the landscape: seeing the vast stars above, the silence, and just the scale of the landscape.” All this was accompanied by the soundtrack of George Harrison playing My Sweet Lord. “I was having these profound experiences and if they were real then nothing could be more important...I made the decision to follow my heart and investigate.” And his heart took him to Canada, later driving from Vancouver through Central America, ending up in Peru and Ecuador. He received his “life assignment” in Machu Picchu and that was an insight about the need to create a more holistic and ecological world and culture and society. He started the Open Center in New York to do just that. Later, he had many other exciting and enlightening travel experiences including an undercover trek into Tibet and being in Russia during Glasnost.   The untold story of this tiny, little-known British Army regiment and the daring men who piloted engineless aircraft to WWII’s major battlefields.   The Glider Pilot Regiment, having been raised as the first element of the new Army Air Corps in 1942 and disbanded in 1957, can probably claim the dubious distinction of having been the smallest and shortest-lived regiment ever to form part of the British Army. Nevertheless, in those few years the regiment gained as much distinction as it has taken other units hundreds of years to achieve.   Yet, strangely enough, the story of these heroic men who piloted their flimsy gliders to most of the important battlefields of the Second World War has never before been told. It is indeed a remarkable story, and no one is better qualified to tell it than Claude Smith, who himself served with the regiment and took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and later in the ill-fated landing at Arnhem, where he was taken prisoner.   Smith tells the story of these supremely brave men factually and dispassionately, but it is impossible to read this book without being moved by their courage.   The stories of the daredevils who attempted to fly over the English Channel—a history filled with triumphs, tragedies, and colorful characters. 
   
  On July 25, 1909, a dapper, mustachioed Frenchman flying a flimsy, diaphanous airplane changed the status of a great nation. “England is no longer an island,” declared the Daily Mail. Lord Northcliffe, the newspaper’s proprietor, had put up the £1,000 prize for the first flight of the English Channel by the pilot of an airplane. 
   
  In securing the prize for one of aviation’s most celebrated firsts, Louis Blériot had beaten his Anglo-French rival Hubert Latham. Six days earlier, Latham had become the first airman to make a forced landing on water when the engine of his elegant Antoinette monoplane failed while he attempted the crossing. 
   
  This book explores the triumphs, tragedies, and many milestones in cross-channel flight, beginning back in July 1785 when John-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries made the first crossing, by balloon. Other flyers quickly followed Blériot so that Pierre Prier made the first non-stop London-Paris flight in April 1911 and Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly the Channel a year later—though her historic accomplishment was overshadowed by the Titanic catastrophe. 
   
  The book also charts other events in cross-Channel aviation such as the midair collision between the UK and France that led to a rudimentary system of air traffic control; the first cat to make the flight; the popular car ferry services of the 1950s and 1960s; and the coming of the jets—providing a colorful history of the era before the debut of the famed Channel Tunnel.
