Summary

In an endeavour to write a book that captures the very essence of Englishness, a young Scot finds himself in 1920s England. To this end, he finds himself in typical English situations and circumstances, including participation in rural sports, international diplomacy, weekend trips to the country, and a village cricket match; all set to the backdrop of a nation going through significant social upheaval. This eloquent and affectionate novel will appeal to those with an interest in English culture and history, and it would make for a charming edition to any collection. Archibald Gordon Macdonell (1895 – 1941) was a Scottish writer, broadcaster, and journalist. Other notable works by this author include: “How Like An Angel” (1934), “The Autobiography of a Cad” (1938), and “Napoleon and his Marshals” (1934). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author. This book was first published in 1935.
Available since: 07/18/2017.

Are the voices in your head listening to you? Oh yes. Yes, they are listening to you. They know what you’re saying. Sometimes, they talk back. Sometimes, they sing along. Sometimes, they write children’s book with hidden messages placed in plain sight with a neon bow because, hey, a little style never hurt anyone. (This, of course, ignores the Great Style Massacre of 1973.) Welcome to “Fun To Grow On” – the new children’s book series for adults. These books are not for little children or big babies. Each story is filled with blood and violence, sex and swearing – Seriously. This series is for adults. These are not parodies of children’s books but original stories for adults who still have a lot to learn… as do we all.“Fun To Grow On” presents the next book in its continuing series… Puppies: Best in Stew!Hal Cheeley was the model Republican. He voted for people full of hate. He worshipped at the idol of Ronald Reagan. He even hired and distrusted immigrant labor. On the morning after the 2012 presidential election, Hal wakes up in his 10 year old body to find himself somewhere in the future. His only answers come from his drugged-out, delusional, and damned 75 year old self. But the answers aren’t good enough. Why is America in ruins? How did global climate change really come to pass? And why does his elder self have this disgusting taste for dog?

Maybe there are people in Antarctica with penguins in their basements, but in Virginia? Finding a body down there is somewhat more likely for Meg. Explaining the penguins' presence is easy; Meg's dad volunteered to take care of the birds until the future of the bankrupt local zoo could be determined. But identifying the body in the basement proves a harder task. Meg and Michael have been planning to elope to avoid the elaborate wedding their mothers have begun to organize; a plan that's threatened by both the murder investigation and the carnival of animals. The only way to set things right, Meg decides, is to identify both their uninvited visitor and the killer who put him in their basement.

Thousands of people start each day with a shot of Coffee with Jesus, the enormously popular online comic strip. Irreverent at times, yet always insightful, this volume features classic entries and all new, exclusive material that was born out of artist David Wilkie's frustration with the polarized political climate in America.
"Originally created as a one-off, single-panel comic on my blog, utilizing old advertising clip art for the main characters and Sunday school clip art for the person of Jesus, I simply enjoyed the notion of Jesus appearing at table with these people (dressed as they were and sharing coffee with them) to refute their claims of how he might vote on any particular issue, to convince them that they cannot confuse their flag with their God—to set them straight, as it were," explains Wilkie.
But it didn?t stop here. Soon the Jesus of Coffee with Jesus could be seen offering counsel to a recurring cast of characters on their personal and work lives. The characters—Carl, Lisa, Ann, Kevin and Joe—all honestly engage with Jesus about their successes and failures and wants and needs, effectively showing what conversation with God—or prayer—might look like.
Poignant, pointed, and rife with good theology, Coffee with Jesus is organized around six themes: getting to know Jesus, spiritual disciplines, relationships, culture, church, and the challenges of life. With exclusive material like twelve-panel mega-strips and "behind the strip" reflections on life, faith and art, Wilkie inventively poses answers to the perpetual Christian speculation, "What would Jesus do?"

The acclaimed novel that was the basis for the classic movie starring Jack Nicholson.

Unlike other branches of the armed services, the Navy draws its police force from the ranks as temporary duty - Shore Patrol. In this funny, bawdy, moving audio-book set during the height of the Vietnam War, two career sailors in transit in Norfolk, Virginia - Billy "Bad-Ass" Buddusky and Mule Mulhall - are assigned to escort 18-year-old Larry Meadows from Norfolk to the brig in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he is to serve an eight-year sentence for petty theft. It's good duty, until the two old salts realize the injustice of the sentence and are oddly affected by the naive innocence of their young prisoner.

In the five days allotted for the detail, they decide to show Meadows something of the life he doesn't yet know to help him survive the long ordeal ahead, and to purge their own shame. What follows is an unlikely road trip by bus and train up the eastern seaboard, and an indelible journey of initiation and discovery, filled with beer-soaked wisdom, big city lights, revelry, brawls, debauchery, love, and surprising moments of tenderness. An Author's Republic audio production.

History is always written by the winners and about the winners. But what about the poor souls lurking in the shadows of history, the ones who were just as remarkable but perhaps didn't stick their chests out as they crossed the line? In Second Best, Australia's foremost historian and comedian Ben Pobjie celebrates the nobility and altogether more fascinating stories of the silver-medal getters. What drove them on their incredible feats, why did they just miss out, and how did they cope with the oblivion of finishing second? From the Second Fleet, the second man on the moon and Australia's second prime minister whose name we consistently forget, Second Best shines a light on those plucky men and women who, through no fault of their own – or at least only a little bit of fault of their own – didn't quite get there before everyone else, but did get there before almost everyone else.
